The SUE Crew Chiefs play a pivotal role in the field by leading underground utility investigations using advanced technologies such as electromagnetic locators and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). This position ensures the precise designation, documentation, and mapping of underground utilities to support engineering, construction, and design efforts.

A core responsibility of this role is not only technical excellence in utility locating—including multi-utility, deep target, and complex congested area detection—but also the active mentorship and development of SUE Technicians and SUE Locators. By transferring knowledge and training others in field best practices, especially in GPR interpretation and integration with EM locates, the Crew Chief helps elevate the entire team’s capabilities and supports long-term career advancement within the SUE discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and interpret data from electromagnetic (EM) and GPR systems to identify, locate, and map underground utilities, including but not limited to water, sewer, gas, electric, and telecom.
  • Serve as a technical lead on GPR investigations, including selecting appropriate antenna frequencies, setting scanning parameters, and analyzing radargrams.
  • Train and coach up-and-coming SUE Technicians in utility locating fundamentals, GPR applications, equipment care, and proper marking/documentation procedures.
  • Maintain equipment accuracy through routine calibration, field testing, and care—especially GPR units which require environment-specific settings and adjustments.
  • Collaborate with SUE Field Supervisors to enhance training materials, troubleshooting guides, and cross-training opportunities for multi-utility locating and advanced technology use.
  • Keep up to date on technological advancements in subsurface utility locating and integrate new tools and methods into daily workflows and crew development

Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or G.E.D. Applicable OSHA certifications preferred.  
  • Four to Six (4-6) years of related work experience with a preference to GPR experience preferred. 
  • Strong attention to detail. 
  • Must be mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position. 
  • Must have average communication skills, both verbal and written and be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. 
  • Must be able to travel frequently and extensively, overnight, and/or out of town. 
  • Must be able to work overtime as required. 
  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. 
  • Must have valid driver’s license and pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Must maintain satisfactory driving record, as required by our insurance company. 
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment background and drug screening. Periodic drug testing may be required per company policy.

 

Added Qualifications Emphasis:

  • Experience with GPR systems
  • Ability to read and interpret GPR radargrams and differentiate between utility signatures and other subsurface anomalies.
  • Enthusiasm for training and developing others; previous mentoring experience a plus.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. 
  • Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. 
  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms, bend and climb and/or balance. 
  • Ability to use tools, and equipment. For instance, Tape measure, cloth / steel tape, machete, hammer. 
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. 
  • CPU literate: Basic computer skills, including familiarity with data transfer and basic software used in surveying. 
  • Must have vision abilities of close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is performed primarily in outdoor environments, often in remote and rugged locations. 
  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. 
  • Physical demands include standing for extended periods, walking on uneven terrain, and carrying equipment. 
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
