Systems Engineering Consultant

Woolpert is hiring a Systems Engineering Consultant I – OR Specialist to support client engagements in planning, management, maintenance, and operation of transportation and infrastructure systems, with a specific focus on delivering solutions through operations research (OR) approaches. Woolpert’s Strategic Consulting Sector focuses on providing guidance and specialized assistance to public and private sector organizations that manage and operate physical infrastructure and transport networks. Typical engagements for this position are likely to include developing, conducting, and communicating complex technical analyses and AI models that support strategic plans for operations and management.

Responsibilities:

• Work with a team to develop varied and complex operational analyses and models in a technical, client-facing capacity.
  • Use technical and creative thinking to develop new and innovative solutions for given problems in transport and infrastructure management and operations.
  • Communicate approaches and values to a broad range of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Draw on experience with a broad range of OR-based technical approaches and software languages used for technical analysis
  • Draw on exposure to transport and infrastructure systems.
  • Lead others in the broad application of OR models for problems related to the management of these systems.

Qualifications:

• BS or MS/MEng degree in operations research, transportation, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in the management and operations of one or more transport/infrastructure systems (e.g., aviation, maritime, highways, energy, water, freight and supply chain logistics).
  • Technical proficiency in the analysis of complex systems utilizing some or all of the following approaches:
  o Mathematical optimization (LP/IP/MIP/DP)
  o Queuing theory, probability, and statistics
  o Simulation
  o Physical planning and design using CADD software
  o Database design and data structures for operational data
  o Financial modeling
  • Technical proficiency with Python (minimum) and other software languages (e.g., C++, R, OPL, and VBA).
  • Ability to work in an autonomous, self-directed environment and in a collaborative, team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal and written English.

• Physical Qualifications:
  • Sit for extended periods of time.
  • Operate and manipulate standard office equipment.
  • Occasionally reach, bend, climb, and/or balance.
  • Frequently lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Travel as required.
