Engineering Designer II

Position Summary 

This position is primarily responsible for performing engineering functions specific to aviation/airfield design under the direction of a Professional Engineer.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

 

  • Performs engineering computations, conducts evaluations, design analyses, and design development.
  • Prepares reports, recommendations, and opinions for approval by a supervising Professional Engineer.
  • Applies standard engineering practices and techniques to adjust and correlate data; recognizes and resolves discrepancies in results and follows operations through a series of related steps or processes.
  • Works as a member of a project team in the development of data and/or applications.
  • Acts as a technical advisor to technical staff.
  • Uses AutoDesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD to develop engineering and design documents.
  • Participates in firm-wide quality initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • The following essential functions of this position are performed personally, in cooperation with your supervisor, and/or in coordination with other staff. Additional work functions and duties may be assigned.
    • Build 2D and 3D models from a variety of information sources following company standards.
    • Design or redesign complex layouts and drawings from general written or verbal specifications.
    • Communicate with design team about concepts, data, and specific needs associated with the completion of design deliverables.
    • Manages personal task assignments and adheres to project scope of work, schedule and budget on all assigned tasks.
    • Performs basic calculations to analyze and design civil system components using Civil 3D.
    • Assists with engineering duties on projects of various complexity.
    • Assists with collecting data and gathering information to support design decisions.
    • Performs a variety of tasks, which may include analyzing proposed project solutions to ensure structural reliability, resource efficiency and cost effectiveness.
    • Oversee preparation of as-built plans.
    • Support construction administration and observation efforts including reviewing drawings and making changes based on field input from Construction Managers.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Must be mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position.

Must be able to read, analyze and interpret basic technical documents.

  • Must be able to apply mathematical concepts.
  • Must have average verbal and written communication skills for both internal and external relationships.
  • Must be able to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries from clients, regulatory agencies, and/or members of the business community.
  • Must have Microsoft Office suite skills.
  • Must possess a highly proficient expertise in AutoDesk Civil 3D and AutoCAD software. This includes profiling, feature lines, 3D polylines, points, daylighting, and grading objects.
  • Familiarity with FAA Design Advisory Circulars a plus.
  • Must have eight (8) years related experience.
  • Input survey data from various file types.
  • Create volume calculations from two surface models.
  • Layout airport features based on FAA Advisory Circulars.
  • Layout Pavement markings for runways and taxiways based on FAA Advisory Circulars
  • Create a storm design and profiles in pipe networks.
  • Create underdrain design and profiles in pipe networks.
  • Create 3-line profiles for taxiways or runways.
  • Hand calculates spots elevations at intersections.
  • Familiar with construction survey layout.
  • Resulting Physical Qualifications:
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to operate and manipulate standard office equipment.
  • Must be able to occasionally reach and bend.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
