Overview

The Entry-Level Engineering Field Technician will support the Engineering Field Technician II and III in conducting various water and water infrastructure assessments. This entry-level role involves assisting with field assessments and data collection under the guidance of more experienced technicians, performing tasks such as calibrating equipment, installing and configuring equipment, recording data, conducting infrastructure inspections, and locating and mapping of utilities. This position is primarily responsible for performing advanced field data collection and troubleshooting for a variety of water-resource-related projects which may require entering confined spaces such as sewer and stormwater manholes. The position serves as a hands-on learning opportunity, where the technician will develop skills and knowledge in essential functions like flow monitoring, water quality sampling/monitoring, and the operation of high value equipment and electronics. As a laborer, the technician will gradually take on more responsibilities, progressing towards independently performing essential functions as they gain experience and proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Acquire required certifications (if any are required) as directed by the Team Leader and Senior Field Technicians. 
• Follow instructions from the Team Leader and more senior Engineering Field Technicians and adhere to established work procedures and safety guidelines.
• Assist and learn to operate and maintain advanced engineering instruments such as flow monitors, water quality sensors, smoke testing equipment, pole cameras, GPS devices and tablet data collectors.  Specific equipment will be determined by the Team Leader and Senior Field Technician.
• Assist in the setup and breakdown of equipment at job sites.
• Transport, maintain, clean, and store equipment and tools, ensuring they are in good working condition.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to instruments, equipment, and data collection devices.
• Assist in collecting and verifying accurate field data for various types of condition assessments and environmental conditions.
• Assist in the recording of detailed and precise field notes, sketches, and reports.
• Follow and enforce established standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.
• Assist with data transfer from field instruments to office computers and perform preliminary data processing.
• Communicate effectively with team members, clients, and other stakeholders to ensure the timely and accurate completion of projects.

Qualifications

• Must have an associate’s degree or high school diploma/G.E.D..
• Must be mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position.
• Must have average communication skills, both verbal and written and be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
• Must be able to travel overnight and/or out of town periodically.
• Must be able to work overtime as required.
• Ability to read and interpret standard operating procedures and manufacturer maintenance specifications.
• Ability to read and interpret maps.
• CPU literate: Competent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Must have valid driver’s license and pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Must maintain satisfactory driving record, as required by our insurance company.
• Must successfully pass pre-employment background and drug screening. Periodic drug testing may be required per company policy.


Physical Qualifications:
• Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
• Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
• Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions including rain, heat, cold, and around water.
• Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms, bend and climb and/or balance.
• Ability to use tools, and electronic equipment as directed by the Team Leader and Senior Field Technicians.
• Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.


Working Conditions:
• Work is performed primarily in outdoor environments, often in remote and rugged locations.
• Work is performed at times in confined space environments.
• Work is performed around water, typically depths greater than ankle deep.
• Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
• Physical demands include standing for extended periods, walking on uneven terrain, and carrying equipment.
