JOB TITLE: SUE (Subsurface Utility Engineering) Field Supervisor

DISCIPLINE/MARKET/GROUP: Survey and Geomatics Discipline 

                    

Job Summary: 

SUE Crew Chiefs are responsible for conducting on-site investigations using various locating equipment and techniques to designate, map, and mark underground utilities. Skilled in using electromagnetic locators. This role involves ensuring accurate and efficient detection of utilities to support construction, maintenance, and mapping projects. This position typically works with a SUE Locator/Designator.  

Essential Functions: 

The SUE Technician utilizes electromagnetic locating systems to detect and map underground utilities, including water, gas, electric, and telecommunications lines. They interpret and analyze data from these systems to identify the location, depth, and type of utilities, marking and documenting their locations using industry-standard methods. This role involves performing routine maintenance and calibration of locating equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability, as well as working with the SUE Utility Locator or SUE Field Supervisor to troubleshoot and resolve any technical issues that arise. The technician maintains detailed records of utility locations, maintenance activities, and equipment performance to share findings and ensure accurate utility mapping.  

 

 

 

Responsibilities

  • Must have high school diploma or G.E.D. Applicable OSHA certifications preferred.  

  • One (1) year of related work experience preferred. 

  • Strong attention to detail. 

  • Must be mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position. 

  • Must have average communication skills, both verbal and written and be able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. 

  • Must be able to travel frequently and extensively, overnight and/or out of town. 

  • Must be able to work overtime as required. 

  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. 

  • Must have valid driver’s license and pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check. Must maintain satisfactory driving record, as required by our insurance company. 

  • Must successfully pass pre-employment background and drug screening. Periodic drug testing may be required per company policy. 

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Utilize electromagnetic locating systems to detect and accurately map underground utilities. 

  • Analyze data from locating equipment to determine the location, depth, and type of utilities. 

  • Mark and document utility locations using industry-standard methods. 

  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of locating equipment to ensure precision and reliability. 

  • Maintain detailed records of utility locations, equipment maintenance, and performance. 

  • Stay updated on advancements in utility locating technologies and practices. 

  • Advance skills and knowledge with the assistance of the SUE Locator and SUE Field Supervisor in multi utility locating, advanced locating practices, and GPR work.  

 

Physical Qualifications: 

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. 

  • Must be able to frequently stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. 

  • Good physical condition and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. 

  • Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms, bend and climb and/or balance. 

  • Ability to use tools, and equipment. For instance, Tape measure, cloth / steel tape, machete, hammer. 

  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. 

  • CPU literate: Basic computer skills, including familiarity with data transfer and basic software used in surveying. 

  • Must have vision abilities of close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 

Working Conditions: 

  • Work is performed primarily in outdoor environments, often in remote and rugged locations. 

  • Exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind. 

  • Physical demands include standing for extended periods, walking on uneven terrain, and carrying equipment. 

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
